COURSES SUBJECT TO FINAL CONTROLLING

Technical courses (Short Green, Green, Blue and Brown) are not suitable for Juniors under 16 due to the number of unmanned, busy road crossings (BOF Rule 5.2 - A disclaimer signed by a parent or guardian does not circumvent this Rule).

Juniors shadowed by a Senior will be allowed to run on these courses, but please contact Organiser before you enter who will explain how to do this.

Accompanied Juniors will be deemed non-competitive. Seniors should compete their run before shadowing a Junior or they will also be deemed non-competitive.

Juniors are under 21 on 31st December.

Students are competitors over the age of 20 still in full-time education. Please check STUDENT on the Entry Form if this applies.

Helpers are entitled to 50% discount on entry fee (please contact Organiser for discount code)

Novice Courses for Seniors are Orange, Yellow & White.

The GROUP category is to encourage competitors who want to run or walk with friends or family on one of the Novice Courses (Orange, Yellow & White).
You will be charged a single fee no matter how large your group is and will receive 2 maps. Don't forget to hire an EMIT card if you do not own one.
For insurance purposes please could you provide the names of the people in your group on the entry form.

GROUP entries are not available on any other courses. If you want to run with someone else on one of the more technical courses, you must enter as an INDIVIDUAL and would be deemed non-competitive. Please contact Organiser before you enter if you are unsure about whether to enter as an INDIVIDUAL or GROUP.

Non members of the British Orienteering Federation (BOF) will incur an additional £1 fee in all categories to compensate for the increased levies paid by NWO.

Late entries will incur an additional fee of £2 on all courses

Discounts do not apply to EMIT hire (lost card charges £50)

Travel Directions
Minchinhampton Common is located between Minchinhampton and Amberley in South Gloucestershire. GL5 5JG. (What3Words: mailers.trades.viewer.) The event will be signposted when entering the Common from both the Minchinhampton and Amberley directions.

Parking
Parking is alongside the Culver Hill Road, adjacent to the Minchinhampton Reservoir, GL5 5JG. (mailers.trades.viewer) Overflow parking is on the approach road to the Old Lodge, GL6 9AQ. (leader.deprive.tearfully)

  • You can amend your entry to change course until 23:59 on 15-01-2025 if maps are still available for the course you want to change to.
  • If you have entered as a Senior Novice (O/Y/W) please do not change to one of the more difficult courses as the fees are higher.
  • Late entries will be available while map stocks last until 23:59 on 15-01-2025, but will incur an additional fee of £2 on all courses
  • Refund Policy
    You may withdraw from the event up until 23:59 on 12-01-2025. Your entry fee will be held as a credit to be redeemed when you next enter an NWO event.

    Timing System
    EMIT card

  • Competitors with their own EMIT cards can proceed directly to the start
  • Hire cards can be picked up from the table next to download
  • Map
    Scale 1:10,000, 5m contours. Survey and Cartography 2005 (R.Teed), minor updates 2016 onwards.
    Overprinted with course on waterproof paper with control descriptions on the front. White, Yellow and Orange courses will have written descriptions; other courses will have pictorial descriptions. Loose control descriptions for all courses will be available at the start.

    Terrain
    Mostly flattish open grassland with some quiet roads and paths around the picturesque village of Amberley. There are many thickets, knolls, depressions and historic iron-age earthworks. The grass over the common is quite short at this time of the year so the area is generally very runnable. The 3 longest courses will visit the steep wooded hillsides around the commons.

    Results
    Results, Splits and Routegadget will be available on the North Wiltshire Orienteers website as soon as practicable after the event

    Conduct
    Please make yourself aware of and abide by the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.

    Clothing and equipment

  • Full leg cover MUST be worn.
  • Whistles MUST be carried and will be checked at the start.
  • In adverse weather we may ask you to wear a cagoule or similar waterproof top
  • Bio-security
    Please come to the event with clean and dry shoes and clothing. Before leaving the event check your clothing and equipment and remove any mud, soil or leaf litter. Once home thoroughly clean your footwear and clothing and leave it to dry for as long as possible. Please take home any litter with you.

    Dogs
    Dogs are permitted at this event on a lead.

    Hazards
    Minchinhampton Common features a golf course and orienteering courses will cross fairways in 2 places. Fairways will be marked out of bounds but in-bounds channels will marked on the map to cross the fairways along existing footpaths.
    There are a number of roads in the area and where deemed necessary, crossings will be manned.

    Safety

  • All competitors MUST report to Download even if retiring from the event.
  • Lone competitors are recommended to leave car keys at Information/Download.
  • Participants to bring their own water and ensure adequate hydration pre and post event. Hand sanitisers will be available; however, we encourage participants to bring their own.
  • Orienteering is a physically challenging sport, and competitors take part at their own risk.
  • The nearest A&E Hospital is at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, GL1 3NN.
  • All road and fairway crossing points on the White/Yellow/Orange courses will be controlled.Light Green will use the same controlled crossings with the addition of a minor road crossing which it is assessed to be safe to cross without a marshal. Care must however be taken.
  • The finish for all courses is approx 500m from download and requires a road to be crossed.
    UNDER 16s ON WHITE, YELLOW, ORANGE AND LIGHT GREEN COURSES MUST BE COLLECTED FROM THE FINISH BY A GUARDIAN.
  • Minchinhampton Common is used by a local golf club. Fairways will be indicated on the map and will be out of bounds except where crossing points are marked.

    Insurance
    The British Orienteering insurance policy provides public liability cover for all competitors registered for this event.

    Medical Conditions
    If you have a high risk medical condition you want the organisers to be aware of please download and complete this form and place it in a sealed envelope with your name on it. This can be left at registration. Envelopes will only be opened if required for a medical emergency. Unopened envelopes should be collected after the event. Any unclaimed envelopes will be destroyed after the event.

    Cancellation Policy
    NWO will make every effort to ensure the event goes ahead as planned. However, should the event be cancelled, NWO reserves the right to retain part of the advance entry fees to meet costs already incurred or committed.
